SOI Ltd was contracted to undertake a shellfish survey in St Andrews Bay for the South and East Scotland Inshore Fishery Group (IFG). Alongside sampling of shellfish species, high resolution multibeam sonar surveys have been undertaken.
This report provides preliminary analysis investigating the potential for commercial exploitation of razor clam and surf clam shellfish populations within St Andrews Bay. A seabed bathymetric and habitat survey coupled with benthic bivalve community analysis of St Andrews Bay was undertaken in spring 2011. St Andrews Bay is relatively uniform in its sediment type, with all sample sites being dominated by sand, and therefore being suitable to support populations of razor and surf clams. However, numbers and sizes of individuals found in this survey would not support shellfish revenue from St Andrews Bay. Recommendations are made regarding the use of alternative sampling gear to fully assess the razor clam populations.
