A Few of our Services

Benthic Survey

SOI Ltd can undertake benthic surveys using grab sampling and high resolution sub-sea scanning to provide a range of products including bathymetry, substrate, habitat and cultural heritage maps.

Ornithology

SOI Ltd offers a range of ornithological services including survey design, data analysis, assessment of productivity and habitat use, and land and ship based surveys.

Mariculture

Significant commercial income in Scotland is derived of marine aquaculture, principally salmon and shellfish farming. These commercial activities must be balanced against the protection of the marine environment, an increasingly complex demand due to the wide range of activities being proposed and the diverse interactions that these may have upon habitats and ecosystem services.

Environmental Impact assessment

SOI Ltd offers a range of services to inform the ecological component of the EIA process. We have a sound understanding of the obligations placed upon developers by the EU Birds and Habitats Directives and the associated requirements for an Appropriate Assessment to be carried out for activities with the potential to impact priority species or habitats.

Research and Development

SOI Ltd's close association with the University of St Andrews provides us and our clients with access to a wide range of research expertise within the University of St Andrews. Alongside the University, SOI Ltd are striving to develop techniques and approaches that may provide industry or government with the tools that they require to help deliver their strategic goals and objectives.

Cultural Heritage

SOI Ltd offer advice and services relating to coastal archaeology, coastal zone assessment surveys, and the impacts of proposed development, natural coastal processes and sea level rise on cultural interests. The skills and expertise available from SOI Ltd in sub-surface and geophysical imaging, geo-chronology and the paleo-environment additionally supports archaeological investigations.

SOI Ltd is closely involved in meeting the increasing demand for the sound assessment of the suitability of a proposed marine renewable site from a range of environmental perspectives. The services offered by SOI Ltd including high resolution sub-surface scanning, ecological survey and monitoring and core sample analysis enables a suite of relevant information to be gathered and interpreted to inform decision makers.

The potential synergies between many of the survey methods and platforms provide opportunities for significant reductions in costs.

Services to the renewable energy sector offered by SOI Ltd should be seen as a vital step in securing the permissions required and demonstrating Corporate Responsibility in the development of the renewable energy sector.

SOI Ltd services relevant to the renewable energy sector include:

  • Design and management of environmental surveys (benthic ecology, ornithological, geophysical & archaeological)
  • Provision of data for and interpretation appropriate for a range of EIA activities.
  • High resolution sub-sea scanning
  • Geochemical analysis
  • Project Management

GF-F-funnelsSOI Ltd offers a range of geo chemical and particle analysis techniques to help identify potential problems with manufacturing processes. The experience of the staff involved provides a level of problem solving ability not normally found in many laboratories.

CaptureOur seas and coasts are subject to a wide range of demands and needs, with the stresses associated with future climate change only increasing the need for sound management of resources.

SOI Ltd provides scientifically robust monitoring advice, data analysis and results interpretation to allow local and national Government to make decisions based on the best information possible.

oilrigSOI Ltd provides a range of services of direct relevance to the Oil and Gas industries both in the exploration and exploitation of new offshore reserves and in the assessment of potential environmental impacts and ways to mitigate against these. CaptureSOI Ltd can undertake a range of geophysical and ecological surveys and assessments to inform developers of site suitability or an indication on site constraints that may be present. We are also able to undertake a range of environmental surveys and monitoring to inform Environmental Statements, Environmental Impact Assessmentsand/ or Appropriate Assessments.

SOI Ltd can provide survey design, management, data analyses and interpretation, and quality assurance of work carried out with SOI Ltd.

CaptureThe farmed salmon industry in Scotland accounts for 40% of the country’s food exports but is under increasing pressure to limit any detrimental environmental impacts that it may have. SOI Ltd provides a range of services that are of direct relevance to the aquaculture sector:

  • Assessment of stock including muscle texture using gene markers
  • Provision of ecological and archaeological data for a range of EIA activities
  • High resolution sub-sea scanning
  • Geochemical analysis for quality assurance and provenance of feeds

degenerating-seawallCoasts around the globe are facing increasing pressure from development, exploitation and sea level rise or storm events resulting from global warming. The need for an integrated approach to coastal zone management has therefore never been greater. SOI Ltd offers a range of services to provide information and advice to manage coastal resources in the most effective and sustainable manner:

  • Design and management of environmental surveys (benthic ecology, ornithological, geophysical & archaeological)
